Judo was created in the late 1800s as a way to continue to practice Jiu-Jitsu without hurting your opponents and to stay in shape while entering less physically demanding jobs.  Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, where the objective is to either throw or take down an opponent to the ground, immobilize or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin similar to wrestling.  Over the years it has become one of the largest Olympic sports.  Judo is a great first martial art and a wonderful complement to any karate style.
